I see what you’re saying, but I don’t think “hypocrisy” is the appropriate word here. It’s not like the NCAA has any control over what NFL teams call themselves.

Yeah, yeah. So it’s a comment on general hypocricy of the American people. Or something. Find me a better word and I’ll swap.

Scott Aaron says:

It’s not even hypocrisy of the American people, since most Americans, including the nominally offended Native Americans, are not bothered by the use of such mascots.

Where there is hypocrisy is that the ban only applies to post-season (according to your quote). So tomahawks are perfectly fine during the season, but offensive in the post-season.

Andrew says:

To me the hypocrisy is in the banning of all Indian/Native American mascots, even ones that are inoffensive (e.g,. Seminoles, Warriors), while a team with a blatently offensive name — the Redskins — is on the national stage.

If the Redskins were, for example, the Washington Darkies, I suspect there would be a bit more of an outcry.

Blatently offensive!? What’s wrong with having red skin?

Hypocrisy is any administrator in the NCAA using the term “student-athlete” with a straight face. As anyone who’s ever taken part in collegiate athletics as a participant or coach knows, whatever bloviation the NCAA undertakes on the supposed behalf of Native Americans is to be taken with the same dose of sodium chloride as anything else its PR machine comes up with.
