Utterly clueless

Published 9/2/05

FEMA director Mike Brown is showing himself over and over to be utterly and completely clueless and incompetent. His total lack of information and inability to take any kind of timely, effective action is indicative of the federal government as a whole.

If there’s ever a disaster — natural or man-made — I think it’s clear that you’re better off being in Indonesia than in the U.S. As CNN reporter Soledad O’Brien said to Brown, they had food and water drops two days after the tsunami. And that was unexpected.

We knew about Katrina for days before and did nothing. This is the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a part of the Department of Homeland Security — it’s sole purpose is to be there for us in the event of a disaster.

And it failed.

Here’s the CNN piece on the total disconnect between reality and government officials.

In case that disappears, here’s a 4-MB MP3 of the interview.

James says:

THE REAL DEAL>> No one cares! They dont. You would think that the office of the president, FEMA, The US Military,National guard…all the KEY PLAYERS in an event like this would in two very plain terms “BE INFORMED.”!! But they are not. Why? They CHOSE TO BE MISINFORMED
How can they depend on the media that you and I, the average person depend on for information regarding the WORST disaster to strike the USA. We all know the military has access to communications via SATELITE, technology available even to the public for a price. How is it then, that it can be said, “THEY DID NOT KNOW”? Truth be told, we all know, The AMERICAN PEOPLE KNOW, that the military alone are capable of things far beyond the average persons scope of perception; I’m talking about AIR LIFTS, EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS, INFILTRRATION MANOUVRES ..the works.
One member of the Congressional Black Caucus talked about the RED HORSE, a division of the National Guard she witnessed among other operations, SETUP a full blown operational medical facility overseas in two days. TWO DAYS!
**Why couldnt one of these moves be used to go in and setup communications, for relief workers and other active forces.
**And IF,….IF, there was civil unrest, chaos and sniping, you mean to tell me the military is scared of a couple,.. handful at the most of gang bangers who have nowhere to go? Surrounded by water, hungry, thirsty, dehydrated? Total BS!. The whole “we are under fire” and ” they have turned to lawlessnes and thuggery” thing was a tiny number of people and was BLOWN WAY OUT OF PROPORTION!
When asked about the communications, one spokes person at Biloxi kept avoiding the fact thet they can use satelite, and just like Bush and all his administation claimed it wasnt the time for finger pointing to elude the question at hand! (I think they are all trained together to answer questions, because they all just answewr in the same stupid way without ACCOUNTABILITY, RESPONSIBILITY and SINCERITY). INFURIATING!

There is one bottom line to all this. MONEY. Show me where the money is, and I will surely follow! Louisiana is a democratic headed state anyway, among the poorest, and WIIFM–”Whats In IT For Me?” This one among other underlyning reasons why the response to the situation took so long. A response even the most uneducated person the matters of state affairs would have made in a heartbeat.
