Indecency

Published 11/15/05

Take a guess: In the third quarter of 2005 — that’s three months — how many complaints about indecency do you think the FCC received?

The answer: five. 1-2-3-4-5.

Oh, plus an additional 23,542 from the Parents Television Council, a right-wing Christian group. Translation: Americans aren’t offended by what’s on TV, only the PTC is.

Well, unfortunately, I can’t read the article in question without registering for the site. However, I can’t sway that the information surprises me. I’ve thought that they were a little more annoying than they should be. I bet if we were to look at all the complaints since the “wardrobe malfunction” we’d see something similar…

David says:

There seems to be a growing sentiment among Christians in this country that this is a Christian nation. I hate to be the non-Christian to break this news to them, but this nation was FOUNDED by Christians; that does not make it a CHRISTIAN nation. This country may have been founded by Christians, but with Jews, Muslims, Christians, Catholics, (and, yes, they ARE different), Hindus, Atheists, and untold other religious sects living and thriving in this country, nobody with half-a-brain can keep a straight face and continue to call this a “Christian Nation”. And on that note, God gave us all free will; the will to do what we want with the life he has given us. And that includes the right to view violence or sexual content, or listen to foul language on TV should we wish to. God gave us free will; who do you right-wing, conservative, Christians think YOU are to take from us what God has given us? I must admit I admire your audacity; but that is about all I admire about you, and your perverted ways of thinking. Cheers!

Jarel says:

You are right God did give us free will to watch whatever we want, however I think that those people who choose not to watch sex and violence and dont want thier kids repeating curse words, shouldn’t have to worry about it when they are watching movies or TV shows that supposedly are okay for kids.

David says:

I don’t disgree that they should not have to worry about it. However, at the same time, if they don’t want to worry about it, then they should take greater steps to monitor their children’s TV habits, and imbue their children with greater morals than most of today’s children have. There is also a reason why radios, televisions and computers come with on/off switches: so when we see something we don’t like, or don’t want our children to see or hear, WE CAN TURN IT OFF!!!!!!!!! People seem to forget that.

But in truth, I don’t disagree with the concepts that radio stations and television stations SHOULD take a higher moral road, and leave the smut to Hollywood. But, as the paraphrasing goes: where there is a buyer, there is a market. Close down the marketplace for the crap we see and hear, and it will go away. Good luck doing that though. If there was a way, I think it would have been done by now. I think that people need to learn that garbage is everywhere, it’s all a question of how you deal with it, and how you not let it get on you. If the PTC and these other groups tried to teach people to think like that as opposed to crusading around trying to “destroy” the garbage, I think they’d let a lot more done, as well as garner much more support.

Chris says:

I agree with David. Quit preaching religion and morals to the masses. Christianity is about choice and belief, not forcing your views on the unwilling. For every PTC member that doesn’t like seeing nudity or violence on TV, there are dozens more who do or are not offended by it. If you don’t want to watch it, read a book. Keep your children under surveilance and leave the rest of us alone. And for God’s sake, keep your creationist ideals/beliefs out of Highschool science classes and our government. The last thing we need is another crusade & unfortunately I think Bush is successfully trying to start another. Impeach them all!!

gnomic says:

“SAVE THE CHILDREN!!!” is the rallying cry for people who want to tell others how to live.

Here is an idea: If you want to insulate your kid from the world - that is your right as a parent - then step up to the plate and do your job as a parent and wrap the brat in bubble wrap and duct tape. Can’t prevent the kid from watching tv despite mandatory inclusion of a V-chip in every TV and cable lockout mechanisms on every cable box?

Allow me to suggest that you get rid of YOUR TV if its that important to you. Kids watches TV at a friend’s house? Sounds like YOU aren’t doing your job supervising the kid.

Quit trying to to stop me from watching smurf porn in my home. You kid doesn’t live here.

The media produces what we want to watch; if people didn’t watch it, it would disappear in an season. Passion of the Christ made a bundle and 6 months later there ere 4 made-for-TV movies and countless specials. They make what sells - its a simple concept.

Here’s a question: If there are so many Christians, why don’t you create your own cable company, INTERNET company, and suppliers that filter out everything else that bugs you?

You can use the free market and get what you want. Why do you feel the need to force your choices upon me? Afraid that your message is so gawd awful boring that you will need to put shows like the Rifleman and and Bonanza (with more killings per hour than prime time TV) just to get people to watch?

(and on a related point - Why don’t we just label the fruits of stem cell reseach and those who object can choose not to partake of the results? Why should those I love suffer for your dumb-ass beliefs?)

Are you afraid that your argument is so weak you have to get the government to enforce it upon me? I missed the part in the Bible that says “And Jesus said to go forth and LEGISLATE…”

Here a scary thought for you uptight fundies - every law that you pass now to shove your beliefs down my throat can be used to shove someone else beliefs down yours. And demographics (that’s explained in the chapter after Evolution) shows that Hispanics - who are primarily Catholic - will outnumber Whites of all faiths in a generation or two.

Pretty soon you will be doing the Vatican Rag (with all due respect to Tom Lehrer):

First you get down on your knees,
Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!

If only someone had warned you that you reap what you sow…

David says:

Bottom line for everybody else who reads this and agrees with, and even more so for those who do not: FREE WILL IS JUST THAT: FREE. You have the right to watch what you want, think what you want, say what you want and do what you want. Those are the rights guaranteed by the framers of our Constitution, and those are the rights given us by our Creator. Ghandi was quoted as saying, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. In this time of moral and ethical tribulation, we each need to start standing up for what is right and true, not what is popular or mandated by government. “…Government by the consent of the governed”. Does that ring any bells to anybody out there? Stand up and take responsibility for your actions and for those actions of those you bring into this world. Teach the children right from wrong, teach them morality, teach them ethics, and maybe, just maybe, this world will turn itself around. Otherwise, you, me, us, we’re all no better than those we complain about. It’s time to take back our lives, fellow humans.

ante-gnomic says:

Those terrible CHRISTIANS!!! Who the hell do they think they are?!?! The nerve of them to voice their opinion… In this nation, everyone EXCEPT Christians are to raise their opinions. To be Christian is to be an ignorant, blind, close minded, pushy, wet blanket. We have guaranteed the right to voice opinions to everyone BUT them. I think it is pretty arogant of them to want to protect the innocence of children. I think we need to be so self-centered that we give up NOTHING for the greater good. It is ALL ABOUT ME! If I want to see trash and filth, then it is my right. Come to think of it, since this is all about what a commercial market will support, I should be able to purchace body parts and organs, buy children, dump chemicals on my property, have sex with 11 year old girls (boys or horses too). I have free will to be an absolute abomination!
I was under the impression that a society has a duty to set a moral code by which it will live. Is this what we have devolved to? A bunch of self-centered, me-first, I don’t care what the repercussions are, perverts? But, let’s get back to bashing Christians, because they are obviously the source of all things bad in this world.
