Sony rootkit hacked — virus reported

Published 11/10/05

So Sony’s content-protection system is backfiring in a big way. The company put software on its music CDs that hides itself in your PC (see my original post here).

Now it turns out that the company has opened the door to viruses, not theoretically, but in reality. (PDF here.)

Here come the lawsuits.

Quin says:

Are they really so blind they didn’t see this one coming? The Rootkit itself sounds like a virus waiting to happen. As far as I’m concerned, they’ll get what’s coming to them.

Tony W says:

Does anyone know if Sony preinstalls the rootkit on their Sony VAIO line of Windows desktops and notebooks along with the Microsoft system software and the usual load of crummy Sony apps? If I were in the market to buy a Windoze machine, I would be inclined to cross Sony off the short list, not only as punishment for their “copy protection” fiasco, but because they may have done something equally reprehensible on their line of computers.
