All this about software

Published 4/14/06

I gotta share this, in case you missed it in the comments. One Mac user wrote the following and posted it over and over in the comment areas.

(Remember, all this nonsense is in response to a column about Boot Camp. A piece of software. These people, especially the yokels over at Mac Daily News, are getting themselves tied up in knots over my comments about a piece of software.)

your an idiot douche. inflammatory? yes! necessary? yes! people as dumb as you should be sent to primary school, where you can learn under the no child left behind program brought to you by your savior President Bush.. p.s. a lot of liberals use macs - people in affluent gay areas like San Francisco, so given the percentage of mac users, and the percentage of voters for President Bush… the majority of PC users are republicans and I say shame on you. You are a racist ignoramus who hates the environment and who wishes he could have more sex with his sister… shame on you. Dumb argument? Yep - and I did it just for fun. Doesn’t reflect well on me? I could care less.

I hear that a bunch of Mac users are planning to start burning Danish flags because a newspaper there published a cartoon of Steve Jobs (PBUH)…

As of 4/16, comments are closed. Make ‘em over in the Boot Camp entry.

I think you might be safer if you go back to writing about Muslims and cartoons they don’t like.

P.S. This guy hasn’t read many of your comments on the current administration… :)

I admit it- I came here to comment on how horrible that article was. But that comment was ridiculous. How did he manage to get politics into that anyway?

read your bit on Boot camp . Maybe its a ploy to bump your readership. But man you are a moron. If you ar a tech writer, you need a new calling. Its fime to try to find a niche, but you are terrible at this.

Your article was poorly written and easily dissected. I love how you say:

“Businesses will buy Macs for their employees, confident they’ll be able to run all the needed applications.”

but then you say:

“The Macs that can currently run Boot Camp are the Mac Mini, the iMac, and the MacBook Pro notebook. Price-wise, they can’t compete with PCs. If you own a business, it’s a pretty easy choice.”

Remind me again, how did you get a job writing? Please, go back to school.

I read your article about Boot Camp on USATODAY.com.
I recently converted from windows-PC´s to Macs.
If I still was a Windows user I would totally agree with your article. But now I shifted to Mac I must say that your article is full of flaws.
Yes there is more software for Windows but with the Mac I can do the same and sometimes even more with less software. On windows I found myself using 4 different programs for editing a film. Now I can do the editing in 1 program, and save time and frustration.

Now you think off course, why don´t you buy one decent program for windows? Well… I haven´t found one yet that does the job without crashing or producing the result the way I like it.

Boot Camp will open the eyes of the curious windows user. Just try it yourself. Buy yourself a Mac. Work with it for a couple of weeks. And then write your article again. The people at Apple are not stupid (well they did make some foolish mistakes in the past) They wouldn´t release Boot Camp if the OSX-platform was inferior to Windows.

My opinion on Microsoft has changed drastically after my shift to Mac. Windows is a fantastic platform for gaming and entertainment. That´s why the XBox is doing so great. Microsoft should focus on the gaming market, and stop frustrating all those people at work with their windows-crashes and security problems.

I find myself opening word-documents on my mac and sending them as RTF to my colleagues. When they open that document in word, they never see the difference. And as a bonus. My document opens flawlessly on other platforms as well.

Also, you don’t really say what you think about either Windows XP or Mac OS X. Do you have a personal preference? I think things like CoreImage and Quartz make a strong case for Mac OS X having “better graphics” than Windows XP. Also, I’ve always found font rendering to be better on the Mac, even in things like the standard pull down menus and whatnot!

Its not about software, Duh. Its about lying to the general public to promote your particular agenda. Lies from people in power piss honest people off. Your editors should be embarrassed, assuming they have a commitment to their responsibility and their profession.

It’s funny because you act like all of what you wrote is the gospel. Macs are more expensive? Compare a base pc to a loaded mac. None of what you wrote makes much sense: no software (I’ve found tons of great programs that pc users would only dream of using), viruses (last time I checked bud, there were some trojans that required users to execute them…compare that to the THOUSANDS of Windows viruses), training (it’s not hard to figure them out…try playing with one).

Unfortunately, it’s another bash the Mac article written by some “expert” in the field. It’s a ploy to draw some readership, I’m sure. Mac users are passionate about their product because it JUST WORKS. I can’t stand using Windows (this coming from a die-hard Windows guy just a few years ago.) Once I used my friend’s PowerBook, I was sold. Brush up on your Mac knowledge. Anyone can make predictions, but unfortunately yours is WAYYY out there.

Hans Karlsson says:

Well, I am fascinated by how much time you spend trying to discourage people from using Macs, in spite of the fact that Apple is only only targeting elite users.

Using both platforms I can tell you that MacOS X is by far the superior environment, that’s just the way it is. It is quite clear from your comments that you don’t have any experience on the Mac platform to speak of, and that is also true for every other Windows person I know of who are arguing against the Mac.

Please stop feel threatened by Apple, and write about some topic where you’ve done your homework, please.

Anti-Virus Software isn’t going to cure Windows or Internet Explorer vulnerabilities. Saying the solution to security is an anti-virus program in your USA Today article, when Microsoft (or third party) has to patch XP holes on a weekly basis, to your readers is as callous as selling snake oil to cancer patients. You already know USA Today readers are the most uneducated newspaper readers in the U.S., why make them more misinformed and vulnerable??

Maddog says:

I just read your article on Boot Camp switchers. I have to say that it is one of the most poorly written articles i’ve ever read. I’ve lost some respect for the USA Today. You fail to prove any of your opinions, and you just repeatedly state them over and over again as fact. And normally i would apologize on behalf of my fellow Mac users, but in this case you’re getting what you asked for.
When you write an article

Joe says:

Honestly dude, I read your article and it was a wonderful example of poor rhetoric and misguided argument. So much so that my rhetoric teacher (I am a college student) used it to illustrate how NOT to write.

I am not going to call you any names, but you need to learn how to write more….coherently. Your article is not even about the software, its one big charecter assassination attacks on every single apple user out there under the guise of “journalism.” And then you put in that line about Steve Jobs and I almost lost it. Go learn about something before you write!

Disclamer: The preceding comment was posted by a member of the “Cult of Mac” who worships “Steve Jobs (praise be unto him)”

yeppers says:

Oh oh oh… so you are willing to publish a cartoon of Mohammed using a Mac (he says “lets try Windows”) and in the same panel have Steve Jobs using a PC and loving it? Because if you don’t want to publish such a cartoon then we have won, using the threat of violence. YAY!!

Russ Conte says:

Not a persuasive piece at all. The article has name calling, character attacks, but no substantive evidence. If one of my employees submitted this to me, I’d reject it due to lack of evidence to support the case, and a lack of discussing the best evidence against the main thesis that Mac users will go to Windows because of Boot Camp. Not one person was quoted who said they will do this, not one study cited, not one article referenced. There is no proof, no evidence. I’m not saying there can not be evidence, I am saying that this article has none.

For example, “Consumers are so distrustful of Microsoft that Apple could double its market share due to defections from the Windows operating system, a report by market analysis firm Forrester Research says.” That can be found via the link below, and came out on Thursday, April 13, 2006:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/macworld/20060413/tc_macworld/applebrand20060413_2

Nothing in the author’s article convinced me that any Mac users will go to Windows because it’s now possible to dual boot. It did convince me to be very cautious of articles from this author from now on, and to keep getting my tech news from sources that I can trust. Sadly, I no longer consider the author one of the few independent and unbiased sources that can be trusted.
