Dilbertesque bio of the week

Published 5/23/06

From the Rosen College of Hospitality Management’s site:

Ron Logan is…

A highly motivated, results-oriented executive who flourishes in a fast-paced, synergistic, creative environment and mentors his people to heightened levels of success; has proven expertise in finding effective solutions to difficult problems by combining creative spirit and strategic thinking.

Synergistic?

Bill says:

I don’t get it.

Andrew says:

Don’t get why I found it funny, or just don’t get how he describes himself?

Bill says:

Don’t get why you found it funny. It seems an appropriate use of the adjective synergistic.

Miranda says:

How exactly is an environment “synergistic”? I don’t think I’ve heard it in that context before.

May 24th, 2006 at 10:49 AM

Bill says:

Well, an environment that promotes working together might be described as “synergistic”. Also, _the_ Environment certainly can be described as a synergistic system.

Jason says:

Ok, the use of synergistic in that description is a bit odd, but ‘heightened’ is completely misused. More intense levels of success?!?! I don’t think so. Higher maybe, but not heightened. That guy is probably using ‘impactful’ also, which is not a word. Basically, the guy’s an idiot.

Bill says:

“heighten” means to increase the degree of and I don’t see how the word is misused here. Granted, it’s a pretty pompous bio.

On the other hand, Jason, your conclusion that the guy is an idiot because he “probably” uses ‘impactful’ is inhospitable at best.

Eric Berlin says:

All right, let me try: I don’t know if Ron Logan is an idiot, but he definitely puts way too much stock in the meaningless language of business-speak. By using ridiculous, 50-cent phrases like “results oriented” and “synergistic,” he may as well be telling us, “I have accomplished absolutely nothing in my professional life, because if I had, I wouldn’t have to pad my bio like this.”

I was doing a google search for his bio and ran across this site.

wordy - yes, but it doesn’t lie. He was the former Vice President of Worldwide Entertainment for Disney and was one of the Executive Producers for the Disney unit that began the broadway productions (Beauty and the Beast and Lion King). He has a Tony. Now he teaches at the Rosen School. He is a behind the scenes heavy in the entertainment world. Here is the Wilkepedia page for him. Hardly an idiot.
