Haggard’s rehab — a poor choice of words

Published 11/9/06

So Ted Haggard, who was ousted by the New Life Church in Colorado Springs after confessing to “sexual immorality” with a a male prostitute, is going to undergo a “spiritual restoration.”

According to H.B. London, vice president for church and clergy at Focus on the Family, the right-wing extremist group:

“From the Christian perspective, we think in terms of prayer, we think in terms of what we call godly counsel, where godly men who are clean themselves insert themselves in the life of the one who is struggling,” London said.

Perhaps they should keep the insertions to a minimum, huh?

First, your comment on Haggard is a JHS worthy joke. This is cool except for your serious slam of Focus. It is silly and just down right dangerous thinking to throw around a word like “extremist” to describe Focus. Extremists kill people. By the measure of human history, and even post-enlightenment modernity, Focus on the Family is milquetoast, boring, and typical.

No lover of Focus; just think people throw around extremist too much.

Hey Mil,

Extremists also seek to ostracize and generally promote campaigns of hate against community members who’s life styles and religious beliefs do not conform to their own. If that’s not HS, I don’t know what is.

I think you’re overlooking the novel style irony of a pillar of the gay bashing Focus on the Family gang being tossed out of the closet. But that’s okay, we didn’t.
