Shocking: Apple writer hates Microsoft product

Published 11/27/06

Writing for the Chicago Sun-Times, Andy Ihnatko pans the Microsoft Zune, competitor to the iPod.

His bio reads simply, “Andy Ihnatko writes on technical and computer issues for the Sun-Times.”

What it fails to mention is that Ihnatko is a columnist for the Mac Observer and for MacUser, and author of The Mac OSX Tiger Book, iPod Fully Loaded, The iPhoto 4 Book, and Dr. Macintosh’s Guide to the On-Line Universe, among others.

A Mac guy hating a Microsoft product — a product that is getting at least decent reviews other places. I am shocked. Shocked.

Get ready for the backlash from fanatic mac fans who know no limits to pouring their wrath on anyone writing something even remotely anti-mac pro microsoft. (whether real or imagined) I’m surprised, I thought you’d learn your lesson Andrew. I suggest you delete all profanity and personal attacks…

Oh, I did. Write about the Mac and get a gadzillion page views… :-)

Have you seen Dvorak’s comments about that?

I updated the main post to make that clear.

Oh, and have you seen my anti-Microsoft column from last week?

The Zune is crippled out of the box. Too much DRM crap.

I can’t seem to find any solid evidence one way or the other, but rumor has it that Zune only accepts the WMA as a valid file. It is in some way crippled when it comes to MP3s.

I find it hard to believe the even M$ could be that stupid when is comes to supporting a common portable format like MP3. But if M$ is that stupid, then they deserve to have this one crash and burn.

Andrew says:

Dan, Dan, Dan — Can’t you tell the difference between a subjective product review like Andy Ihnatko’s and an objective story about sales?

One is like a Toyota magazine giving a bad review to a Ford car. The other is like Car & Driver discussing Camry vs. Focus sales.

Dan R says:

I can tell the difference. But can’t you admit that the sales reports may indicate that Inahtko’s contention that the Zune sucks is based on his experience rather than any alleged pro-Mac bias?

Andrew, you self-promoting troll! But I say that with great affection and a big smile.

This should amuse me for the next few days. Thanks. :)

Both my wife and I have iPods and while the hardware is OK (except battery life drops from 10 hours to 2 if use acutually use the video feature), the iTunes software SUCKS. Its’ a pain to use and is basically a bug-ridden adware infested mess. I doubt if Zune could be worse. Luckly, there are a lot more non-MS non-apple choices out there now.

I love my iPod.

And of the five zillion incarnations of music software that I’ve tried, iTunes is the best. And I’ve gone through musicmatch, winamp, etc…

iTunes has it beaten by a mile. And I’ve not seen any adware… if you don’t want to access the music store, you still have a solid piece of software.

And I’m a Windows user.
