Bush tripled aid to Africa; pledges more by 2010

Published 12/31/06

I’ve never liked people who either praise or bash everything the President does simply because they love or hate many of his policies. Blind faith in anything as either good or evil is never a good idea.

That said, this article deserves mention:

Bush Has Quietly Tripled Aid to Africa
Increase in Funding to Impoverished Continent Is Viewed as Altruistic or Pragmatic

[snip]

The president has tripled direct humanitarian and development aid to the world’s most impoverished continent since taking office and recently vowed to double that increased amount by 2010 — to nearly $9 billion.

Bravo.

Other than making yet another promise he can’t keep (he’s out of office by 2008, hopefully much sooner), I’d agree. Maybe no one has told him that being PResident isn’t like being Emporor for life.. It certainly would explain his actions

In the past and the present we (America) seem to send our forces to help nations that benefit us in some way. And I can understand that to some degree. (I’m not highly intelligent on world affairs) I personally think we have failed to send forces to help Africa many times in the past and I think maybe the president realizes this and is trying now by sending finacial help. Maybe I’m idealistic but would like to believe so. Anyway this is one American opinion.

I would not be so quick to congratulate anyone on a vow. When the actual money begins to flow and actual results are seen from that then I would congratulate him.

To be honest I would much prefer that the money be spent here in America where it is desperately needed. Not to say that I do not care about Africa. I think that there is great need there for both financial and humanitarian aid.

All I can say is the help is going where it should though forgetting that internally there’s bigger problems, like jobs, schooling, Katrina aftermath… It’s sad to see the American foreign policy being a bigger issue than internal affairs. Isolationism would be a better idea right now. I suggest you take a look at a nice little video called “End of Suburbia”, this gives some insight on many issues.

On a side note, GaryL’s comments hit the spot.
