I love beating the AP

AP story today about a proposed “forever stamp” from the Post Office — pay today’s First Class rate, but the stamps are good for First Class postage forever.

Of course, I liked the story more when I wrote about it more than a year ago. :)

I like the idea of a forever stamp, but they’ll never go for it. God forbid they give up the two cents.

I don’t get this statement:

“Consumers would purchase them anytime they like, and they’d be good on a first-class letter forever,” she explained. The post office could raise rates every year (as businesses would prefer) and consumers wouldn’t have the nuisance of buying new stamps.

Why would businesses prefer that rates go up every year?

Join me in my crusade to get the post office to quit rasing rates and start cutting costs by delivering to residential areas every other day. Think of all the gas this would save, and costs would almost be cut in half!

I’m guessing businesses would prefer an annual increase because it’s easier to plan for. Right now, every time there’s a postal hike, magazine publishers, for example, have to rework their budgets. [shrug] Just a guess.

Every day to rural areas might be do-able, gnomic. I also think that we could save a LOT of money by having only two or three stamp designs instead of a trillion of them. Who really wants the USPS tribute to the mighty slug? It’s stupid. I’d say that they should do a standard USA stamp, a love stamp, and some sort of non-denominational winter holiday stamp. I’d be good with that. Think of the money we’d save if we quit contracting people to draw us fancy new designs, like my current stamps honoring the pepper. :P

I like this idea, Andrew. Make it so.

Andrew says:

Ah, Dorene, you’re missing an important thing: If you have cool pictures on stamps, people will collect them. Collect = not use. It’s free money!

Dorene says:

Well, they’ll always have the thousands of different coins that they make now. And I doubt they’ll raise the price of a nickel… or, well, I hope they won’t.
