RIP Jennifer Parcell

Published 2/9/07

In today’s Editor & Publisher there’s a story entitled, “Young Woman Meets Tragic End — No, It’s Not Anna Nicole.” Its point: The breathless media coverage of Anna Nicole Smith’s death means stories like the one below are shamefully overshadowed.

From the AP:

A 2004 graduate of Fallston High School wh o followed her older brother to the Marines was killed during fighting in Iraq, the Department of Defense said Thursday.

Cpl. Jennifer Parcell, 20, of Bel Air, Md. (reading a citation in the photo below) died Wednesday “while supporting combat operations in Al Anbar province,” a Department of Defense news release said.

“If you knew her, you loved her. She was a go-getter. She knew what she wanted in life and she was doing what she had to do to achieve that,” Parcell’s aunt Martha Benton of Aberdeen said.

Parcell joined the Marine Corps in January 2005. Benton said she’d wanted to enlist since attending her brother Joseph’s graduation at Parris Island. The 24-year-old enlisted in February 2003 and he is returning from his tour to be with family.

The brother and sister were stationed together in Iraq for about a month before their tours of duty separated them, Benton said.

Math was her forte at Fallston High School in 2004, Benton said. She said Parcell always enjoyed the water, including boating and scuba diving.

She also liked yoga and music and spending time with family and friends.
Parcell was assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Okinawa, Japan. She had earned six medals and Benton said Marine Corps officials told the family Parcell may be eligible for a Purple Heart.

“We’re just going to miss her very, very much,” Benton said. “She was always someone you could count on.”

The family was notified of her death Wednesday afternoon.

Also Thursday, the family of a 21-year-old Navy paramedic from the Eastern Shore said he was killed when a Marine helicopter crashed in Iraq Wednesday.

Manuel Ruiz, of Federalsburg, was two weeks into his second tour of duty when the CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter he was riding in crashed, killing six other persons onboard.

There’s no point to my putting this up other than to help ensure that anyone searching for “Jennifer Parcell” has a better chance of finding her. RIP, corporal.

I can’t believe how celebrety “news” is actually considered news? I had the same thought - why is thei flustercluck end of a wasted life on every channel WHILE THERE IS A WAR ON?! Besides the pit that news has sunk too in order to get ratings, I also suspect that people don’t feel like thiere is anything they can do to change this adminstration’s hard on for killing people in the middle east. It’s not like our elected representatives are doing anything but wrining thier hands while our children are sent to die for no good reason.

But thats not news.

I have to wonder after reading gnomic’s post if I’m the only one whose computer spell checks my post in real time. I thought it was a feature of the blog software.

Anyway, as a photographer, I was drawn to the distortion in size of Cpl. Parcell’s cover. Apparently shot with a long lens.

Emily - Sorry; I can’t spell worth a damn and left my glasses at work. And I’d kill for a real-time spell check in my browser!

If you have Firefox, you can get a spell checker for it. It’ll check everything you enter in a Web form. Very handy!

Ah, so it’s Firefox. I thought it might have been a mac thing or something. It just “magically” appeared when I installed the last upgrade. I find it very handy for when my fingers outrun my brain.

Thank you so much for writing this. I am a graduate of Fallston High School and have been disgusted with the over-coverage of Anna Nicoles death. So many people are fighting for us overseas and yet this is all people care about? Ugh (disgusted sound)

Rest in peace, Marine. May your sacrifice never be forgotten, and may the pains your family feels be eased in short order.

Jennifer was a friend of mine…we came to Okinawa the same week I did so we went to the same briefs and ended up living in the same barracks….we didnt talk that often but when we did it was nice, she was a sweet girl with great morals and alot going for her…the fact that the death of a pseudo-famous rich woman takes precedence over the death of a good Marine who tragically lost her life serving her country is extremely distressing…I couldn’t help but break down at her Memorial today in the Foster Chapel here in Okinawa as we said our goodbyes to a friend and fellow marine, someone who had a real impact on peoples lives…Rest In Peace Jennifer

Very saddened to hear of the death of Jennifer Parcell. Please extend my deepest sympathies
to the family. Following is a poem which states it perfectly:

Because of You, I’m Free
By Norma Wright

Each time I see a waving flag, my eyes see so much more,
The ones who died to save us from an evil at our door.

The Army and the Navy, the Air Force and Marines,
Have paid the price so I am free to live and see my dreams.

The Army Reserve and Coast Guard, always at the country’s call,
To serve, protect and help us as they daily give their all.

And though this country still is young; we’re strong and we have power,
Because of those who sacrifice, who’ll go at any hour.

I call you friend, my soldier, for someone who’d give their life,
Is more than just a friend to me, for you were there to fight.

And fight you have for freedom and the rights we hold so dear,
You fought so we can live in peace and not live life in fear.

I know there’s nothing I can do that can and will repay,
The debt of gratitude I owe when I woke up today.

For when I leave my home today, I know that I can be,
And speak and go where I may want, and that’s because I’m free.

This country is so blessed to have the soldier brave and true,
So I salute you now my friend; my hat is off to you.

Because of you I have a choice of where I go to work,
Or where I live or go to school or where I go to church.

I have the right to speak my mind and freedom of the press,
The right to have a weapon or to start a street protest.

But rights and freedoms would not be at our foundation’s core,
If you’d not fought the battles and the long and bloody wars.

For those who don’t believe in war or going out to fight,
Are those who cannot understand the reasons we have rights.

And those who think that war’s a crime and want to live in peace,
Are blinded by the devil’s lies, for war has made us free.

We’re free today because of you; you’ve suffered, bled and died,
Not one has ever died in vain for God is on our side.

To thank you seems so incomplete for words cannot contain,
The gratitude that’s in my heart for wounded limbs and pain.

The families that you leave at home, the friends you leave behind,
Are proud of you and thankful for the sacrifice of time.

No matter where you go or fight, where you may live or serve,
Please know that there are those at home who mean these grateful words.

Because of you this country lives in freedom, peace and wealth,
And I don’t take for granted every battle war has dealt.

Though grateful words are not enough and they can never be
I’ll say what’s truly on my heart - because of you, I’m free.

I have a daughter who is a Marine and was mystified that the news hasn’t mentioned Jennifer yet has covered the self-destructive demise of Anna Nicole ad nauseum.

My thoughts are with this girls family and hope that the news media gets some perspective on this tragedy.
