I wonder if they sell snarks, too

Published 4/23/07

I was amused to find a book of mine listed for sale at Amazon.ca — Amazon’s Canadian operation. It’s Internet World’s Elements of the Internet fro, 1990-something.

Problem: I never wrote the book. It was a proposal that we were talking about, but all I have is an old Word file laying around.

Yet there it is, selling for — HUH? — selling for $790 bucks? (Well, Canadian bucks, but still.)

And there’s a copy? Let’s click:

So Frobisher Books of Oregon is selling a non-existent book for CDN$790.22 and is specific enough to say it’s in “Very Good” condition. Wild. Absolutely wild.

Wow, how weird is that? If you google the isbn you get all kinds of hits.

I think you have plenty of snark already.

Maybe it is a sign telling you to write the book.

Frobisher Books — you sure the company isn’t in Erlanger, KY?

i remember you talking about writing that book. is it possible or likely that you could have sent a copy of that word file to someone for proofing or anything?

…and what about your royalties?

It would almost be worth buying it to see what it was, exactly, except that it’s $790! (Of course, isn’t that like $17.50 USD? ;) )

Randy says:

Well, maybe in the future you end up writing the book after all, and someone from frobisherbooks travelled into the future and brought it back? Do you have any idea how expensive it is to operate those time machines? :)

On the other hand, if that’s true, you could save yourself a lot of time in the future by buying the book now and turning it in whenever you *do* get contracted to write the book.

It’s now selling for only 381.69 CDN, a bargain price! Why not ask them for a photograph or a table of contents or something. Their excuses will be fun to read.
I (and evidently others) suspect that some of the sellers on Amazon don’t actually possess the books they list. They are instead attempting price arbitrage across different book markets.
The giveaways are:
1) The description of book is vague or non-existent. Since they don’t possess the book they can’t be specific.
2) The delivery time is quoted in weeks, not days. They have to buy the book elsewhere first.
3) A ridiculous price. They have to buy the book elsewhere and still make a decent profit.
4) Their listing disappears as soon as the only other copy on sale (possibly in another market) has sold. This is difficult to spot unless you are monitoring a rare book. But it does happen.

They are also selling a book of mine (self-published and about three sold) for 10 times the retail price. Google produces nothing for Frobisher Books so one has to wonder!

You guys are lucky. They have 2 copies of mine. For #3.30. Canadian.

That just sucks. Andrew doesn’t write a book and it sells for more than the one I did write.

Andrew says:

Well, in a sense it’s like paying me not to write.

Try this link, on the second Google page of hits when searching for Frobisher Books.http://fraserbooks.blogspot.com/2007/02/books-available.html
Note the price.
I was searching for an NTSC version of “Train de Vie” (Train of Life). Amazon USA does not have it, but Amazon.ca has a listing by Frobisher Books, claiming to ship from Oregon! Needless to say, there is no website for the firm.
