The camera is pretty mighty, too

Sometimes there’s a fun and easy way to deal with idiot drivers. Case in point:

I was driving from my home the other day, and had just crossed an intersection into a narrow street. Coming the other way was a woman in an Audi. My side of the street was full of parallel-parked cars, but there was a gap on hers. I moved forward so I was across from that gap and she could zip around me.

But no. She wasn’t smart enough to do that. Instead, with a grimace on her face, she came right at me and stopped right in front of me, blocking both of us from going anywhere. Then she motioned for me to get out of her way.

The only way to do this was to back up into the intersection. So no way. I shook my head, and she indicated that she wasn’t going to move. Genius, I tell you. I indicated the same. So we sat there, me refusing to back up into an intersection, she refusing to use the space to her right to go around me. Incredible.

So I broke the stalemate. I reached over, grabbed my camera, and started shooting. I made sure she saw me shoot her license plate — CATMOB — as well as her face. When you’re a moron and someone can prove it, it tends to spur you into action.

Making faces that looked like she was either constipated or the reverse, she proceeded to make a big deal about ’squeezing’ by. Of course, had she not been an idiot and come over to my side of the road in the first place, there would have been plenty of room.

Here’s what it looked like. There’s empty space in front of the white Nissan on her side. (Click for larger.)

And here’s CATMOB’s lovely face. Hope she finds a bathroom soon.

Now that was cruel and uncalled for.

Don’t be picking on cats.

I used to live right around the corner from Catmob (or at least from where she parks, I have no idea where she lives). I know these streets well. They demand courtesy and common sense - and the knowledge of how to handle a four-way stop, which is rare in this town.

This happened right here — I was headed east. That’s Evergreen Cemetery on the upper right.

Yep, that’s the place. I recognized the view of the mountain. I lived on Canterbury from 1995-2002.

Good for you. What an idiot. I bet you’re glad you had your camera.

Yeah, I got into the habit a while ago. Way back when, a gentleman tried to pass me by going on the shoulder (a case of “I’m going to merge in where I damn well please”).

I didn’t feel like letting him in, so I pulled out my point and shoot and held it up for him to see.
He pulled in behind, knowing that the photo would have shown him clearly driving down the shoulder.

And I’m convinced that when I had an accident about 12 years go (entirely my fault), that my taking lots of photos of the other driver and her passengers and car saved me a lawsuit. She never even asked my insurance company for damages, despite my smacking up her rear bumper.

An associate of mine had to have the police restrain a trucker after an accident. He got out his digital camera and started shooting after the truck rear-ended him and the driver didn’t approve. from what I hear, there were some really tense moments until the police showed up. The trucker chased him into his car demanding the film. (No clue there…)

Speaking of cats…

I wonder if “CATMOB” indicates that there is a mob of cats at home waiting for her? She might be one of those perfectly sane and normal folks who lives in a tiny house with 200 cats.

Either that or it’s a euphemism for a brothel. :)

Now THAT is scary…

Every day - E-V-E-R-Y D-A-Y, I deal with this same situation of narrow streets with cars parked on both sides and idiots who drive on MY side of the street! I work in Providence and drive on and around the Brown U campus and that is totally this place. People (who have a clue) actually fold their side view mirrors back when they park on most streets. Because it’s NARROW!!! I just hate the people who have to drive 4 feet away from the nearest car! I hate the people who have to PARK 4 feet away from the nearest car too! Like, if everyone parked like you’re supposed to, we could fit 2 or 3 more cars on the street and people wouldn’t have to walk an extra block or two!

But I hate the college kids on bicycles more. Most of them don’t concern themselves with the rules of traffic at all. The most vindicating bumper sticker I have seen since the 01.20.09 one is one that had a picture of a bike with a rider and said: “SAME ROADS, SAME RIGHTS, SAME RULES” I actually yelled out, “YEAH!!” in my car when I saw that one. They fly through stop signs, around corners, across traffic, through red lights, just zip-zipping along as if the world revolved around them on their lightweight alloy frame and their no-helmet-wearing selves.

Okay, I have gone off on a little tangent there, sorry.

I totally know what you mean about this woman. People here don’t stop long enough to snap a picture, but I would do it if I could!
