John Roberts and epilepsy

Published 7/31/07

So apparently Chief Justice John Roberts could officially be said to have epilepsy. That means he’ll need to weigh the possibility of more seizures against the side effects of anti-epilepsy drugs. Those include, apparently, “irritability, mental slowing and forgetfulness.” I don’t see the problem. He’s a Bush appointee, so would anyone know the difference?

If epasode are as infrequent as reported, I doubt if he’ll take the medication. Of course, they can become more frequent over time and, if so, I suspect that he may step down if they impair him too much. While I despise his opinions, I’m not ready to declear him as unprincipled as Scalia and Thomas just yet. IT will be interesting to see if they are ready to trample the Constitution and uphold the derived (as in not written in the Constitution anywhere) right of Executive Privledge over the explicit obligation (as stated in the Constitution and dicscuss in the Federalist papers) of Congress to oversee the Executive branch in hte name of the people. If Robert’s sides with the administration, we’ll know that he’s just another partisan hack.

The comment “He’s a Bush appointee, so would anyone know the difference?”, and referring to the apparent side effects of anti-epilepsy medication is low and uncalled-for. Make no mistake about it, Chief Justice Roberts is a brilliant man, and President Bush made a wise choice in appointing him to the Supreme Court. Providence never decreed that we all agree with his opinions, wholly or in part. The anti-epilepsy medication, valproic acid, is a synthetic concoction, and it is prescribed for a number of conditions besides epilepsy. It WILL slow the mind, makes one’s hair fall out, among other things, so if one can help not taking the stuff, he or she shouldn’t.

I’m not all that old, but I’ve been around long enough to observe that irritability, even anger, are seen often on the Congressional floor, and mental slowing and forgetfulness are common in politics, especially when criminal charges are involved. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have been immune from “disremembering.” I believe the garbage men hauled out the stones a long time ago.

The comment may have been low, but not uncalled for. Gonzo said “I don’t recall” 64 times to Congress. Is his incompetent or a liar? I think he’s both - an incompetant liar - working for an ignorent fool puppet controled by a evil, power-mad idealog who thinks the Consitiution is an inconveinence that can be brushed aside with a Presidential order.

Not that the Democrats are any better, but at the moment they aren’t wiping thier arse with the Consitution. They are mearely running harmlessly in circles, demonstrating thier ineffectiveness.

I am a left wing, progressive, Democrat with Epilepsy. I have taken meds for it for 14 yrs and my mind is not “slow”, my hair has not fallen out and at 52 I am at the top of my game in my chosen profession. I disagree with John Roberts on most issues but I wish him well with any health concerns he might have. To sink to the level of wishing ill health on those with whom we disagree is choosing to swim with the bottom feeders. I am far more concerned about the step back we seem to have taken with the misunderstandings perpetrated by ignorant people regarding Epilepsy than I am by anything the Supreme Court will do. Shame on my fellow liberals who have taken this track.

Keep up the good medication management, CeeCee! The people I know who are taking anti-epilepsy medication are not so lucky. They’ve had to deal with weight gain, hair loss, problems with short-term memory, pre-diabetes mellitus, and one even lost the ability to do anagram puzzles, which she had been a whiz at. When she persuaded her doctor to let her lower the massive dose she was on, that ability returned.
