I ran a nursing home for 6 months. Afterward, I’ve lost all fear of dying of a suddend heart attack. I’ll stnd on my own oxygen hose if I have to.

There are a few good ones, but during my time on an ambulance I learned something. Most nursing homes are a living Hell for their residents.

As a nurse, i feel that I need to point out a few assumptions that are being made, both by Andrew, and those who responded to the fantastic soundbite Andrew attributed to a nurse.
If you look closely at the original source, the person who was quoted is not a nurse; she is a nurses aide. There is a HUGE distinction between the two, and frankly Andrew I’m amazed that you didn’t recognize that.
The term nurse is commonly used to refer to a registered nurse (aka an RN). Nursing requires education, licensing, etc.
I would also like to point out that the reason that nursing homes are living hell is because they employ nurses aides to care for their patients. Nurses are present, but the ratio is usually one nurse to every 30-50 patients.
And I would also like to point out that while the nursing shortage has not quite reached a critical level yet, it will soon. When it does, you won’t have to worry about the quality of nursing care you receive as you lay in your bed in the hospital because you will receive none.
ok, hopping off the soapbox now…

I read the article and missed that too. And in my experience, its mostly the low paid, under trained CNAs that have this attitude. Most of the nurses like working in nursing homes as the pace is slower and they get more time to interact with the residents.
