Fitna, Islam, and messages being sent

Published 3/28/08

Muslims upset at being portrayed as violent crazies by the movie “Fitna” have threatened the lives of the staff of LiveLeak, a video-sharing site, forcing the site to remove the film. (It’s still available on YouTube.)

Following threats to our staff of a very serious nature, and some ill informed reports from certain corners of the British media that could directly lead to the harm of some of our staff, Liveleak.com has been left with no other choice but to remove Fitna from our servers.

LiveLeak does still offer video from Islamic extremists, including, for example, “Martyrdom volunteers attack apostates & western interests in Algeria” (Reads the description:”Near simultaneous martyrdom attacks upon the Prime Minsters building, Interpol, & a security force building claimed 26 dead & 160 wounded. Al Qaeda in the Maghreb is a growing force.”)

And then there’s “Qaida al-Jihad: The Radwaniyah Martyrdom” — one of those videos a suicide bomber made before killing himself.

We wouldn’t want people to think that Muslims are, you know, violent and crazy.

Nor would you want all Christians judged by the snipers and bombers they had a few years back.

The root of this evil is a system that keeps many in poverty and hopelessness, and a bunch of nutcases that use the situation and a crazy interpretation of islam to recruit people.

Its not much different from the anti-abortion or anti-gay groups that recruit marginally insane people to stand around any yell at people going to clinics or people who burn down buildings in the name of ecology or people that toss red paint at people who wear fur. Although the intent is different, the basics - disaffected nutcases following another nutcase with more charm or personality or sense of purpose is a sad state of the human condition that has been exploited for centuries.

In the case of most of these muslims, if they had employment, choices, a sense of freedom and something to lose, I suspect that much of this nonsense would cease.

Gnomic - I agree with everything you said. Especially the last sentence!

The problem is that the islamic extremist movement is exponentially larger than your examples of anti-abortion and anti-gay groups. Entire towns, entire cities, entire generations are being indoctrinated into these ways of thinking exactly because they have no other employment or sense of freedom. They feel oppressed and the extremist groups prey on them when they are very young and impressionable. They bring them into the fold and those people end up marrying and having kids and teaching that same hatred and feeling of blame for their lot in life.

It’s really overwhelming to think about that part of the world ever being able to overcome that level of insidious beliefs. It’s why Iran, or any of those countries, having nuclear weapons is such a scary concept.

I am sure you know all of this, in fact, from what I have read of you on Andrew’s site, you DO know all of this. Your comment just touched a nerve for me. I hate knowing that there are entire countries that would inflict such violence on people from this country just because we live here. And even harder to hope we will ever sway them from their beliefs.
