All the good names might not be taken

Posted 04/11/07

We’ll see how this goes. On a whim, and with the wife’s grudging consent, I’ve registered a new domain for my collection: jackrabb.it.

I took a page from the del.icio.us book — make a word from a top-level domain. Naturally, with the success of del.icio.us, most of the good words ending in “us” are taken (although I haven’t tried things like suspecio.us or specio.or or pecio.us).

In perusing the possibilities, though, I noticed that some domain registrars will do international domains, including .it (Italy), .io (Indian Ocean), and so on.

I took my friend Eric’s suggestion and went to OneLook.com, which lets you enter things like *it to find words that end in “it.” And there are plenty of good ones (although, sadly, both dipsh.it and bullsh.it are spoken for).

Here’s the we’ll-see part: Technically, you have to be in the EU to register domains in Italy. So when I filled out the form I used my real address, but used IT as the country instead of US. It went through. Now I just have to see if the credit card clears.

If it does, I get to be thumper@jackrabb.it for at least a year. :)

Problem with Yahoo groups?

Posted 03/29/07

My wife, who’s a member of several Yahoo groups, reports that for the past couple of days she’s been getting multiple copies of every e-mail sent to the group — in some cases, a dozen. And, she says, it’s happening to all her groups. Being that she has a lot of interests, from job-hunting to quilting to [sigh] Stargate: Atlantis, I wonder if it’s a widespread problem.

Anyone else noticed this?
