A “smell test” for people with brain injuries has a 100% success rate in predicting whether patients would regain consciousness.
Unconscious people who varied their inhaling in response to scents were most likely to regain consciousness. And even those who were apparently in a vegetative state — if they turned out to vary their sniffing “they later transitioned to at least a minimally conscious state.”
