Shoo, porpoise, shoo!

Everyone loves porpoises — they’re as cute as dolphins but with a harder-to-spell name. So no one wants them trapped by fishing nets, right? Right. The (potential) solution: underwater “pingers” placed with fishing nets that warn off Harbour porpoises. Even better, University of Exeter researchers found that not only do the pingers have no negative effects on the porpoises’ behavior (they much quieter than the sounds they make), fears they would become used to the sounds turn out to be unfounded.
